History The Rockefeller Center was named after John D. Rockefeller, Jr., who leased the space from Columbia University in Rockefeller initially planned a syndicate to build an opera house for the Metropolitan Opera on the site, but changed plans after the stock market crash of 1929.

It was the largest private building project ever undertaken in modern times. Construction of the 14 buildings in the Art Deco style (without the original opera house proposal) began on May 17, 1930, and completed in Principal builder and "managing agent" for the massive project was John R. Todd. The construction of the project employed over 40,000 people.

"I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity, an obligation; every possession, a duty. I believe that the law was made for man and not man for the law; that government is the servant of the people and not their master. ….” In 1962, the center management placed a plaque at the plaza with a list of principles in which John D. Rockefeller, Jr.believed: John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
