 Describe combustion reactions of hydrocarbons and their resulting by- products.

 I can describe a combustion reaction.  I can differentiate between complete and incomplete combustion.

If there is plenty of oxygen the products of burning hydrocarbon fuels are always carbon dioxide and water. This is complete combustion. methane + oxygen paraffin + oxygen kerosene + oxygen carbon dioxide + water CH 4 + O 2 CO 2 + H 2 O General Formula: Hydrocarbon + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide + Water CO 2 + H 2 O

 Candles  Campfires  Fireplaces  Car engines  Grills  Gas stoves  Kerosene Heaters

incomplete combustion When there is not enough oxygen for complete combustion to occur, incomplete combustion takes place. methane + oxygen carbon monoxide + water CH 4 + O 2 CO + H 2 O General Formula: Hydrocarbon + Oxygen Carbon Monoxide + Water

 Why is the formation of carbon monoxide a serious concern? It’s a poisonous gas that is both colorless and odorless. Carbon monoxide can bind to oxygen in the blood and cause CO poisoning. Symptoms include headache, dizziness, and nausea. Eventually suffocation can be a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. Proper ventilation and the use of carbon monoxide detectors in the home can help to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

 What is the equation for combustion of a hydrocarbon?  How do you differentiate between complete and incomplete combustion?
