Transition to Inclusive EPUB 3 eco System Avneesh Singh Co-chair, TIES project

Objective Facilitate the DAISY production houses to migrate to inclusive publishing system using the EPUB 3 specifications.

3 Dimensional approach Production processes and systems (Migration to accessible EPUB 3 Publisher relationships (relationship between DAISY production centres & publishers) Consumption of accessible content (Reading systems)

Navigable Audio-Only EPUB 3 Guidelines Navigable audio-only books form 90% of DAISY collection Working draft of Navigable Audio-only EPUB 3 Guidelines: Navigation on basis of Sections, pages & skippable structures

Braille production from EPUB 3 EPUB 3 is text centric, great source for producing Braille Potential to automate 90% to 95% of Braille production But the remaining 5% to 10 % requires special treatment Most of times this 5% to 10% is the most important component of the publication Need capability to associate the specially treated Braille (embosser ready Braille) with the publication.

Braille production from EPUB 3 contd. Approaches identified are: W3C Open Annotations John Boyer’s UTML mark-up DIAGRAM content model.

DIAGRAM Content Model Tactile element can point to external Braille files like BRF, ASCII arts, Unicode Braille, SVG etc. DIAGRAM xml containing the tactile element can be referred by the the EPUB 3 publication by using describedby or describedat attributes

Survey hosted by TIES Production Group 37 DAISY producing organizations responded to the survey Most organizations produce Leisure reading, education books with simple mark-up & children books A few produce Education books with complex mark-up & Newspapers 17 has either introduced EPUB 3 or have started experimental EPUB 3 production.
