Problem of the Day Set up the proportion needed to find the height of the tree in the picture below.

1-3: Measuring in Metric Units Change metric units of Length, Capacity, and Mass; Estimate metric measurements

Metric Measurement System Vocabulary Metric Measurement System International system of weight and measurement, that utilizes the decimal system.

Length Capacity Millimeter (mm): Thickness of a dime. Centimeter (cm): about the width of your little finger. Meter (m): about the distance from a doorknob to the floor. Kilometer: about the length of 11 football fields; 2 ½ laps around football field track. Capacity Milliliter (mL): a spoon holds about 5 mL. Liter (L): a little more than a quart. Mass Milligram (mg): About the mass of a mosquito. Gram (g): About the mass of a paper clip. Kilogram: About the mass of a pair of shoes, baseball bat.

Estimating metric measures… Length of a pencil. Height of the classroom ceiling. Mass of a textbook Length of the Smartboard Mass of a student desk Thickness of a piece of paper Thickness of a textbook 8) Capacity of a typical water bottle 9) Length of the classroom 10) Length of your desktop About 19 cm A little more than 3 m About 1 kg 1 ½ meters About 5 kg 1/3 of a mm 3 ½ cm ½ a liter 7 meters About 30 cm

Vocabulary Kilo 1000 Hecto 100 Deka 10 Base Unit 1 Meters, Liters, Grams Deci .10 Centi .01 Milli .001

Keep in mind... Cross cancellation simplifying when multiplying fractions. 5 x 18 = 6 25 Canceling also holds true for units… 871 cm x 1 m = 1 100 cm

To convert units within the metric measurement system… THINK: Are you going to a “larger” unit or a “smaller” unit. Will you have more or less of the new unit??? Determine the base unit conversions Set-up the conversion factor that will cancel the original unit, while introducing the new unit. Multiply factors, canceling units where necessary

Problems/Examples of A) ___ L = 90 mL 1 L = 1000 mL 90 mL x 1 L

Problems/Examples of B) 0.6 mL = ___ L 1 L = 1000 mL 0.6 mL = 1 L

Problems/Examples of C) ___ mg = 2.7 kg 1 kg = 1000 g 2.7 kg x 1000 g 1 g = 1000 mg 2700 g x 1000 mg 1 1 g

Problems/Examples of D) _____ km = 620,000 m 1 km = 1000 m 620,000 m x 1 km 1 1000 m
