a campaign to mobilize and inspire students to fight AIDS in Africa

Mama Katele, an HIV-positive refugee of the conflict in the DRC and the inspiration for FACE AIDS.

AIDS: The Social Tragedy Life-saving treatments cost only $140 per year in the developing world Yet only 1 in 4 people needing treatment receive it Mother-to-child transmission of HIV is entirely preventable Yet 500,000 infants were infected by their mothers in 2007, 90% of them in sub-Saharan Africa

Pin-making Projects Employ individuals suffering from AIDS and extreme poverty Work in 12-month cycles 6 months pin-making 6 months building small businesses

From Zambia to Rwanda : With funding from the Los Altos and Saratoga Rotary Clubs, employed 70 HIV affected men and women in two refugee camps in Zambia : Now work with 100 HIV affected men and women in rural Rwanda

What We’ve Accomplished With Your Support In 2005, when we received funding from Los Altos and Saratoga Rotary Clubs, we had less than $10,000. With your support we provided income and support for 70 people in Zambia, and now 100 people in Rwanda We expanded to 150 chapters on campuses across the country who have distributed 70,000 AIDS awareness pins Through these projects, we’ve raised $1.1 million for AIDS treatment and comprehensive health care through Partners In Health in Rwanda

Partners in Health (PIH) PIH was founded by Paul Farmer and Jim Kim in 1987 to bring the benefits of modern medical technology to those who need them most. They run comprehensive care clinics in some of the poorest regions of the world—Haiti, Mexico, Peru, Siberia, and now Rwanda. These are two pictures of Joseph, the first patient that PIH treated for HIV in Haiti, before and after he began taking life-saving medication.

Mission: Provide high-quality healthcare to the world’s most devastated populations Why: Because basic health is a fundamental human right How: Works in collaboration with governments and other NGOs to guarantee access to lifesaving treatments for people in regions where they operate Impact: Showing the power of optimism, dedication, vision, leadership in changing norms and outcomes. …A Preferential Option for the Poor

Goals for 2008/2009 Employ 100 more men and women affected by AIDS in Rwanda to make 60,000 more AIDS awareness pins Recruit 100 new chapters at colleges and high schools Reach fundraising total of $2 Million by June 2009

FACE AIDS "I just wanted to say how much your activism means to me, and to all of us at Partners in Health. So much of this work begins and ends with the sort of commitment you're all making through your involvement with the FACE AIDS campaigns. So thank you!” -Paul Farmer, founder, Partners in Health "Young people often bear the brunt of the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS. I applaud FACE AIDS for their leadership in engaging youth from around the world on this pandemic, and am pleased that FACE AIDS is supporting my Foundation's collaboration with Partners in Health in Rwanda.” -President William J. Clinton
