Indian Journal of Physics: A Scientometric Analysis Dr. Swapan Deoghuria Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science Kolkata – 700032, India And Dr. Gayatri Paul

Plan of the talk Background The Journal : Indian Journal of Physics Objective Methodology Findings Future Scope Conclusion Acknowledgement

Background Paradigm shift in the field of journal publication : merger, acuisition, monopoly business Increasing number of journals : 28,100 active scholarly peer-reviewed journals in August 2012 Journal – pride of an academic organization Journal performance : Credibility, circulation, accessibility, impact factor etc.

The publishing cycle

Indian Journal of Physics - Some facts Popular and oldest Physics Journal in India Sir C. V. Raman was the founder and first editor Official publication of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) Published in Print form (since 1926) and Online from 2009 Present Impact Factor is 1.785 in 2012 The journal is devoted to the publication of original scientific research results in the form of full papers and short notes

Indian Journal of Physics - Branches of physics covered Astrophysics Atmospheric and Space physics Atomic & Molecular Physics Biophysics Condensed Matter & Materials Physics General & Interdisciplinary Physics Nonlinear dynamics & Complex Systems Nuclear Physics Optics and Spectroscopy Particle Physics Plasma Physics Relativity & Cosmology Statistical Physics

Objectives To study the Indian Journal of Physics in terms of quality of Physics Information sources through: Publishing trend Authorship pattern Analysis of citations Affiliated institutes of citing authors Countries of collaborating authors and the collaboration Subject analysis Analysis of the pattern of citing journals

Methodology Research articles published during the period 2004-2013 and cited subsequently (up to March, 2014) were considered. This 10 year period is arbitrary. The idea behind that a scientific paper got maximum citation within 5 years. Citation information collected from online citation database of Scopus of Elsevier and Web of Science of ISI Web of Knowledge. Primary data recorded, tabulated and analysed as per citation year, cited journals, affiliation of the authors and subject area of citation.

Findings and Discussion: Impact Factor

Findings and Discussion: Publishing Trend - Quality

Correlation Between Article Published and Its Citation Coefficient of Correlation (r) = +0.7306 Based on Karl Pearson’s Formula, Coefficient of Correlation (r) = n∑dxdy– (∑dx)(∑dy) ————————————— √n∑dx2- (∑dx)2 x √n∑dy2 - (∑dy)2 Where, x= Article Published y= Articles Cited It clearly shows that correlation between article published and Its citation is positive

Calculation for Coefficient of correlation X Y dx = X-174 dy= Y-88 dx2 dy2 dxdy 245 115 71 27 5041 729 1917 207 81 33 -7 1089 49 -231 140 -34 -39 1156 1521 1326 106 37 -68 -51 4624 2601 3468 129 34 -45 -54 2025 2916 2430 161 96 -13 8 169 64 -104 185 146 11 58 121 3364 638 204 123 30 35 900 1225 1050 170 113 -4 25 16 625 -100 189 86 15 -2 225 4 -30 ∑X= 1736 ∑Y= 880 ∑dx= ∑dy =0 ∑dx2 =15366 ∑dy2 =13098 ∑dxdy =10364 Coefficient of Correlation (r) = +0.7306

Findings and Discussion:Degree of Collaboration C= Nm/( Nm+ Ns )where, C= Degree of Collaboration Nm= Number of multi authored contributions Ns= Number of single authored contributions In the present study the value of C is: 1512/224+1512=0.87. This brings out clearly the prevalence of team research in Physics field.

Findings and Discussion: Citation Analysis

Findings and Discussion: Organisation wise Citation of Articles

Findings and Discussion: Subject Analysis

Findings and Discussion: Countries of Collaborating Authors

Findings and Discussion: Analysis of Citing Journals

Future scope Archiving of back volumes (1926 – 2008) Keeping the archive in institutional repository for free and open access Language editing support for contributors of non English speaking countries like China and middle east Exchange program with other journals published by learned societies

Conclusion This paper attempts to judge the publication’s quality rather than the individual articles. In Indian context it is one of the best physics journal but still lagging behind other leading Physics journals published from USA/European country. Over the last five years Impact factor is steadily increasing which is a positive aspect of the journal. After a co-publishing agreement with a reputed commercial publisher (Springer) in 2009, it is now easily accessible both in online and offline which will increase citation in the coming years.

Acknowledgement I would like to thank our Director who gives full support to make this paper.

Thank You Questions & answers

Impact Factor Impact Factor (IF) of a journal in the year 2013: IF(2013) = C / (S(1) + S(2)) = 665 / 204+170 = 1.778 665 = (317+348) C: number of citations in the year 2013 which were published in the years 2011 and 2012 S(1), S(2): number of articles in the journal published in the years 2011and 2012
