Argument essay writing, or: how to get people to do what you want.

Your introduction should answer these three questions  What is this?  Why am I reading it?  What do you want me to do?

The Introduction  1. What is this?  The first paragraph of an argument essay should set the context by reviewing the topic in a general way. (Background Info)  2. Why am I reading it?  Next, explain why the topic is important ( exigence ) or why readers should care about the issue.  3. What do you want me to do?  Then present the thesis statement. This is the main idea of the essay/ argument. This is where you tell the reader what it is you will be arguing.  Lastly, introduce your evidence or main arguments. This is where you tell the reader what to expect, layout your argument

Example In most countries, possession and use of cannabis that is also commonly known as marijuana is considered illegal. In fact, it can be noted that for many years, cannabis has been considered to an illegal drug in most countries. Nevertheless, today, some countries have legalized cannabis while other countries have not. In particular, small quantities of cannabis have been allowed in regions such as Europe, North America and South America. Moreover, in the United States, some states such as Washington and Colorado have also legalized the possession and usage of marijuana for medical purposes. On the other hand, various penalties are imposed for use or possession of cannabis in most countries. The penalties generally range from simple to severe punishments. Possession of small quantities of marijuana is not punished the same way as possession of large quantities. In this argumentative essay, I seek to argue the reasons why cannabis should be legalized, and why it should not.

Let’s talk about that example…  What was the point of that paragraph?  Is it easy to tell for which side of the legalization argument the author is arguing?  Does this paragraph do anything to convince you about why the issue matters?  What are some things that could have been done different to make this a better introduction?
