What is a Scholarly Journal? Journals allow scholars to:  Communicate with other experts in the field  Stay current by reading other scholars’ work  Create a community of scholars  Participate in a formal “conversation” about work/research/innovation  These conversations first began as letters between scholars; with Gutenberg’s printing press, more scholars were able to enter into the conversation.

Scholarly Journals… often have an abstract, a descriptive summary of the article contents, before the main text of the article. generally have a sober, serious look. always cite their sources in the form of footnotes or bibliographies. written by a scholar in the field or by someone who has done research in the field. The affiliations of the authors are listed. the language of scholarly journals is that of the discipline covered.. Sometimes known as artspeak the main purpose of a scholarly journal is to report on original research or experimentation in order to make such information available to the rest of the scholarly world. many scholarly journals are published by a specific professional organization.

And They are Important Because….? 1. The information in a scholarly text has been rigorously evaluated (peer review), so it is more reliable and credible. 2. Reading scholarly journal articles for your papers or projects can give you insight into the ways of thinking of experts in that field. 3. Every scholarly text has extensive bibliographies that introduce you to important texts in the field.

Brass Tacks… Where can you go to access this information?  Scholarly Journals are often accessed through subscription databases  Art Full Text  ProQuest  JSTOR  Scholarly information can also frequently be accessed via museum websites The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s site is an excellent resource  Another strong resource for the arts is the Oxford Art Online database – good place to begin your research  Need clarification on a medium? Citation Chasing! Find a collection of sources that will “talk” to one another  Search for a scholarly article on your research, using  Art Full Text  JSTOR  ProQuest  Read the abstract or skim the first few paragraphs, to find out what the article is about.  Check the footnotes/endnotes/bibliography for interesting citations  Search for two or three of those citations in  Cornish Library catalog…  A database…  Other library catalogs (SPL,WorldCat.org, UW)…
