 Independent college students are individuals—not numbers  Every application is personally reviewed  Classes are smaller and taught by professors not teaching assistants  Students receive personal attention to help them success in college and life

 There are over 75 nonprofit, independent colleges and universities in the state.  Requirements and tuition vary  Two and four year institutions  Cannot legally discriminate, but generally is not restricted in setting admissions policies ◦ May or may not require exam scores ◦ May or may not require personal statements ◦ May or may not value talent over a high GPA

 Many institutions make broad efforts to recruit students from underprivileged backgrounds  Tuition fees tend to be higher than at public universities though many institutions offer financial aid (tuition range is $6,000 to $54,000)
