Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals What is a goal? Next

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Goal: “the result or achievement toward which effort is directed” Next Dictionary.com (2013). Goal. Retrieved from

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Goal: Lose weight Go on vacation NextBack These goals are very general. How will you know when you’ve successfully achieved them? What do you have to do to achieve them?

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals NextBack A SMART goal adds criteria to the goal statement that must be met to have successfully achieved the goal. For example, a SMART goal must be…

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Specific M A R T Back A Specific goal shows you the way from where you are to where you want to be. They give you direction.

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Back GoalSpecific Questions to Ask Lose weightHow much weight do you want to lose? By when do you want to lose the weight? How will you lose weight- eat healthy, exercise? Take a vacationWhere do you want to go? For how long? What do you have to do to take a vacation- save money, schedule time off from work? Asking specific questions, such as the questions listed in this table, can help you focus your goal. Let’s revisit the goals stated earlier…

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next By answering these questions, you can add more specificity to your goal. Now, how will you know if you are progressing toward achieving your goal? Back

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Specific Measurable A R T Back Adding a Measurable criteria will help you determine if you are on track to meeting your goal. This criteria can include dates, precise amounts, or both to help you measure your success.

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Back Now, let’s add criteria to the sample goals of lose weight and go on vacation. Goal #1: Lose weightGoal #2: Go on vacation How can you lose weight? Specific By eating healthy and walking 30 min. daily How much weight do you want to lose? Measurable: 20 lbs. End result: Lose 20 lbs. by eating healthy and walking at least 30min. daily. Where do you want to go? Specific: Hawaii For how long do you want to stay? Measurable: 7 days End result: Take a 7 day vacation to Hawaii.

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Now what? Well, a goal can’t be achieved if it is unrealistic. For example, a goal to lose weight, stated as Lose 20 lbs. in 1 week is unrealistic, not to mention unhealthy! To increase the likelihood of achieving your goals, being honest about your capabilities is important. So, SMART goals must be… Back

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Specific Measurable Attainable R T Back Attainable goals help you keep your goals realistic. If you set a goal that is out of your reach, it may cause you to get discouraged and to stop setting goals for yourself. However, setting goals that are too easy doesn’t allow you to grow. Attainable, but challenging goals provide the greatest sense of satisfaction when achieved.

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Okay, now that we have realistic goals that are specific and measurable, we have to ask the question, Why? Goals that are specific, measurable, and attainable, don’t have any value if accomplishing that goal is not important to your future. SMART goals also need to be… Back

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant T Back Greater effort is put forth, and greater satisfaction is felt when the goal has current meaning in your life and to your future life and career. You don’t have to write the reason into the goal, but occasionally reviewing your goals is important to keeping them Relevant. Take a look at how to make the Lose weight goal more relevant.

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals How are you going to lose weight? Next How much weight do you want to lose? Goal #1: Lose weight Specific: By eating healthy and walking 30 min. daily. Measurable: 20 lbs. End result: Lose 20 lbs. by eating healthy and walking 30 minutes/day, before high school reunion. Why do you want to lose weight within 3 months? Relevance: To attend high school reunion. Back

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next There is still one criteria of a SMART goal that hasn’t been explained. Goals without limits are likely to go unachieved. Without an end date, it is easy to procrastinate on working toward that goal. So, goals should be… Back

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Specific Measurable Attainable Relevant Timely Back Goals should be Time-bound to provide a final destination…a day to celebrate success for its achievement. Let’s revisit an earlier goal and add a time-bound criteria to the goal, Go on vacation.

Effective Time Management-Module 1: Creating SMART Goals Next Where do you want to go? For how long do you want to stay? Goal #2: Go on vacation Specific: Hawaii Measurable: 7 days End result: Take a 7 day vacation to Hawaii by June 30, When? Timely: June, 2015 Back
