Campaign Kick-Off

Emily Vandivert Senior Architectural Engineering Maryville, Missouri Empower

Our future … We must prepare our graduates to face future societal technical needs while concurrently addressing the creation of the knowledge through research to support these needs. While we will continue to prepare “street-ready” engineers, we must acknowledge that these streets may be in Bolivia or China, or that they may be “smart highways” for new transportation modes, or that they may be even on the Moon or on Mars.

What we do … We create and convey knowledge –We teach –We do research/consulting –We engage in service … for each other, for our community, for our profession

How we do it … We are a funnel and a filter –We collect knowledge and information that we then share … with our students, with our colleagues, with our profession

Why we do it … We offer a different kind of education for our students –More hands-on experiences –Curricula exceed minimum accreditation requirements We believe that experiential learning enhances the education of our students –It provides leadership development opportunities –It provides insight into the global market and business world We produce “street ready” engineers that require less hand holding when they get their first jobs We instill in our students the ability to learn for life Our benefit-to-cost ratio is high considering the income our students receive relative to the cost of their education

Our goals … To prepare graduates to solve technical and engineering challenges at home and around the world for generations to come To enhance the national reputation of our programs and students among employers, future students and peer institutions so that we are known as a “destination of choice” To engage in multidisciplinary scholarly activities that foster knowledge creation and technology transfer in key targeted areas

We will prepare students to meet the engineering challenges of a global society by requiring experiential learning activities and degree programs for entrepreneurship and leadership development Program Innovation David Hackney, CE’12 Engineers Without Borders (EWB) St. Louis, Missouri

We will promote the appeal and value of our degree programs to diverse student populations by making admissions into our programs competitive and by providing scholarships that make Missouri S&T financially attractive Program Access Sara Tabatabaei Ph.D. Student Civil Engineering Qom, Iran

Faculty Development We will foster interdisciplinary teaching and research within the department and across campus by investing in faculty that mentor students and who are in engaged in research and activities in areas of greatest global need

The Professor of the Practice position is a key to enabling the Department to continue and enhance its ability to produce graduates who are ‘street ready’ engineers. In addition to connecting the basic concepts covered in lecture classes with the application of those concepts to problems encountered in the practice of engineering, the Professor of the Practice will also enhance the nontechnical aspects of what is expected of our graduates, including what it really means to be a professional engineer — character, integrity, licensure and the code of ethics. — Jerry Bayless “ ” A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. — Henry Brooks Adams ( ) Jerry Bayless Associate Professor Civil Engineering Mentor

Knowledge Creation We will encourage scholarly productivity, knowledge creation, and technology transfer in targeted areas that has academic merit, is of value to industry, and can lead to technological breakthroughs

Targeted Technical Growth Areas Building sustainability Energy infrastructure and environmental impacts Infrastructure materials

Targeted Technical Growth Areas (continued) … Health-threatening environmental pollutants – detection, assessment and counter-measures Resilient infrastructure systems under multi- hazard/extreme loads Advanced engineering educational methodologies

Advanced Construction Materials Lab (ACML) Concrete Testing Researchers test the shear behavior of high strength self-consolidating concrete for MoDOT and USDOT.

3D View New Advanced Construction Materials Lab Rendering Ground Level: 10,007 sq. ft. Second Level: 2,600 sq. ft. Next Phase for the ACML Opportunities Design Project Support

Join us on this journey! We are setting a vision of where we want to be in the decades to come as a leading academic department Our graduates must be equipped to excel –They must not only be technically skilled, but they must also be communicators, leaders, and collaborators … with a bold and creative entrepreneurial, innovative mindset! Alumni and students are central in what we want to accomplish as well as in how we will reach this vision
