Child Prostitution in the Philippines Andrea De Angelo Sexuality and Culture

Child prostitution is generally defined as any person under the age of 18 that engage in prostitutional acts.  Child prostitution is when this child under the age of 18 offers sex to others and gets paid for it.   In the Philippines, children as young as 9 years old engage in this act!

Young girls..Young women.. Prostitution within the Philippines is considered an industry.  Prostitution in the Philippines is very well known among young girls and women. Yet it affects both younger boys and girls.  In recent studies and findings there are around 75,000 children prostitutes currently practicing in the Philippines.

Studies show.. In a recent study, children ages 11-15 claim that prostitution was introduced to them by their relatives.  Every year that passes more children in the Philippines are pressured into becoming prostitutes.

Ranking.. Due to prostitution...Philippines is ranked fourth in the world.

Filipino Men.. Filipino men are the primary users of child prostitution.  The children look to turn to prostitution because of a possible neglect at home.  The feel that an older man may give them the attention they are looking for.  At the same time their getting paid.  They feel needed and "responsible" because they have a "job".".

Turning to prostitution because.. -poverty/helps support their family that may be in need or struggling financially.  -they were treated bad at home and may have been raped themselves.  -family introduces it to them

Effects on Filipino Children.. Filipino children never truly recover from the possible trauma that they suffer from being prostitutes.  Psychologically they are scarred and suffer from mental  trauma. Other problems include having pregnancy difficulties, Aids, Hiv and severe depression.

Angeles City.. Angeles City in the Philippines is labeled the "sex capital".  75% of prostitutes are children here.  This is the number one place for sex tourism.

Prostitution = Beneficial ? ? ? Prostitution in the Philippines is second nature and is believed to be beneficial.  A few other believed to be benefits of prostitution are... -helps pay for schooling -pocket money -helps afford new clothes -"responsibility"

Sex is style! Sex is believed that it will never lose style.  Because of this belief they feel that it is not necessary to stop the children from being prostitutes.  Someone, somewhere will always want sex and they can offer it.

SEX TRADE!

Sex-ed or ed alone? Many children in the Philippines are working instead of going to school. This work consists obviously of selling their bodies for money. Because of their “work” they are losing the opportunity of being in school. It is believed that if more of these children go to school it would change their lives positively

In short… Prostitution has been around a long while. In the Philippines, it is considered the number one place for sex tourism and prostitution services.  The children that take a part in this act and do it for security because they are insecure.  They also do it because it pays good.  Starting at such a young age makes the children traumatized and most of the time are unable to recover. Child prostitution is the worst form of child labor!
