CATALASE LAB ENZYME REACTION LAB

NORMAL CATALASE ACTIVITY Reaction rate of 4 Room temperature What did the bubbling represent?

REUSABILITY OF CATALASE Same piece of liver was placed in new hydrogen peroxide Did the catalase cause bubbling and speed up the reaction?

OCCURRENCE OF CATALASE Apple, chicken, and potato were added to hydrogen peroxide Compare the reaction rates (bubbling) Is catalase found in other living tissues?

EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON REACTION RATE Catalase and hydrogen peroxide were placed in temperatures of 0, 37, and 100 degrees Celsius (room temperature was previously done) Reaction rates were compared Does temperature have an affect on reaction rate of catalase with hydrogen peroxide?

EFFECT OF pH ON REACTION RATE Catalase was added to neutral, acidic, and alkaline (basic) solutions of hydrogen peroxide Compare the reaction rates Does pH have an affect on reaction rate of catalase with hydrogen peroxide?

EFFECT OF AN INHIBITOR An inhibitor is a molecule that can fit onto the active site of the enzyme, but can’t react (this is competition for the substrate) Hydroxylamine (the inhibitor) was added to the catalase and hydrogen peroxide Compare reaction rates of with and without the use of an inhibitor Does an inhibitor affect reaction rate of catalse with hydrogen peroxide?

LAB WRITE-UP Title OMIT for this lab only Problem (each part of the lab needs one) Hypothesis (each part of the lab needs one) Procedure (each part of the lab needs a short and concise paragraph Continue with next slide

CONCLUSIONS Introduction paragraph discussing the reaction (what are enzymes and their functions in general, what is the enzyme, substrate, and products in this lab, what are you measuring?) ELABORATE! Discuss what a normal reaction is (What does the bubbling represent?) Discuss whether catalase is reusable or not, and how do you know (support with data)

CONCLUSIONS Discuss whether catalase occurs in any other tissue or not (support with data) Discuss effect of temperature on reaction rate (include optimal temperature), support with data Discuss effect of pH on reaction rate (include optimal pH), support with data

CONCLUSIONS Discuss effect of inhibitor on reaction rate, support with data Discuss any errors and what each has caused Summarizing paragraph concluding enzyme reactions and effects on their reactions
