Enhancing Knowledge on EbA at Decision-Making Level Adaptation Knowledge Day IV 6 June 2013 Thursday Bonn, Germany Batu Uprety Nepal

Climate Adaptation: High Priority for Nepal Climate change is affecting people, communities, economic sectors and ecosystems Nepal's NAPA has 9 priorities and about 75% of Nepal's NAPA priorities could be implemented using EbA approach EbA approach has been started CC Policy and LAPA provides additional opportunities to manage ecosystems

EbA Approach in Action Global Flagship Project – develop tools NCCS Programme – LAPA implementation NAPA ecosystem restoration (EbA) Project Urban EbA Project in Asia (Nepal) – urban-rural linkages

Knowledge Gaps Low level of understanding on ecosystems, services and social & economic values Ecosystem services considered 'natural gift' and 'free of cost' Low level of understanding on nature and quality of ecosystem services and their use for human well-being 'Loose' understanding of biodiversity – mostly flagship wild animals Value of flagship species realised

Knowledge Gap... Non-appreciation of ecosystem/biodiversity conservation priorities Lack of convincing information on economics of best practices and ecosystem services Little knowledge on biodiversity values outside the protected areas Lessons of EbA approach Difficulty to influence non-biologists to use EbA approach at different levels

Bridging the Gap Nepal overcome challenges as per NAPA priorities Developing operational definition of biodiversity Repackaging information on EbA approach Expanding use of EbA approach at 'functional level' Influencing decision-making through proper communication Demonstrating, in economic term, ecosystem services enjoyed by urban and rural people Sharing lessons on 'what worked' and 'what did not'
