Different Note Review Methods

Outlining your notes Best used for well organized material that moves from main ideas to details. (History)

Charting your notes Great for subject matter that can be broken down into categories, such as similarities/difference, date/event/impact, pros/cons, etc.

Mapping your notes Uses graphic organizers and diagrams to organize notes; It is useful for those who learn best with visuals.

Cornell Notes

Developed in 1949 by Walter Pauk at Cornell University. History Developed in 1949 by Walter Pauk at Cornell University.

Why? He developed Cornell Notes in response to frustration over student test scores.

How? Cornell notes get students to process notes THREE DIFFERENT times!! Recall the Forgetting Curve.

Why should WE learn how? “When used appropriately, students are GUARANTEED to increase their knowledge and raise their grades in ANY given class.”

Write a proper heading: Class and Date S = Set up your paper Write a proper heading: Class and Date

S = Set up your paper Save 1/3 of the left hand side of the paper for questions by folding or drawing a vertical line

Write notes on the right side of the page. T = Take Notes Write notes on the right side of the page. Abbreviate and Paraphrase Skip at least one to two lines between each idea.

A = Apply your Thinking Within 24 hours of taking your notes, review your notes and write questions on the left side of page.

R = Reflect on Notes Within 24 hours, add a summary to your notes at the bottom half of the paper.

R = Revise the Notes Compare notes with classmates or textbook for items you might have missed.
