Animal Camouflage Now you see me – Now you don’t!

Why do we need to know this? This is the standard you need to understand 08-LS4-4. Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individuals' probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.

Camouflage Camouflage is a type of adaptation that helps an organism survive in its environment. LS4.C: Adaptation: Adaptation by natural selection acting over generations is one important process by which species change over time in response to changes in environmental conditions. Traits that support successful survival and reproduction in the new environment become more common; those that do not become less common. Thus, the distribution of traits in a population changes. (MS-LS4-6) Camouflage is a color or pattern that allows the organism to blend into its environment

Cryptic Coloration: An animal's exterior has colors or patterns to match where they live.

Disguise: An animal or insect is the shape and color of something in it's habitat. mcdonald/camo.htm

Counter-shaded: An animal has the upper part of its body (its back) is dark and the under part (its belly) is lighter in color. f_cntnt_ml_adapt.html

Mimicry: Pretending to be what you are not. Usually involves looking or acting like another animal that is either poisonous or bad tasting to avoid getting attacked or eaten. One is a Monarch and very yucky to eat. The other is a Viceroy and very yummy.

Mimicry: Animals can have large spots on their wings and backs that look like the eyes of a much larger animal
