QA/QC working group Working group ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)1

First questions QA/QC working group Group organization Mandate clarification & consolidation Tasks & preview on work organization ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)2

Group organization Members – Julien GIRAUD – Ralf HERTENBERGER – Francesco LACAVA (Contact person) – Sotiris VLACHOS QA/QC meetings – Regular meetings Vidyo (face-to-face if needed) Frequency: every 2 weeks – Specific meetings As often as needed for discussions on specific topics (in particular with other groups) First meeting yesterday ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)3

Mandate From Mauro and Fabien Scope : The QA/QC here addressed mainly concern construction but not PCB QA/QC which is taken in charge by a different group. A link between these groups must be established. 1.Identify all individual components/parts to be labelled, recorded, individually tested and the parameters that should be recorded. 2.Identify checks needed during construction 3.Establish methods for the quality follow-up during the construction of the different parts at each construction site. 4.List the parameters and results of the checks to be recorded. 5.Establish the manual for the quality at the different phases of the modules construction. ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)4

Mandate consolidation (1/) Implicit objectives: – to help defining all resources needed at construction sites “Construction” ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)5 Identify & if possible define all the QA/QC tasks to be done during the construction ??? supplier subsidies) Delivery from « suppliers » StorageAssemblyValidationPackaging Shipment to CERN ??? CERN) Including checks, qualification and overall management Questions for consolidation : -Items (except RO supplier subsidies (before delivery) to be considered? -Some CERN to be considered? -Limit with the services? Be sure that QA/QC perimeter is not overlapping the one of another group

Mandate consolidation (2/) ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)6 1/ Identify all individual components/parts to be labelled, recorded, individually tested and the parameters that should be recorded. Data needed: List of parts & components Parameter book (including material) ATLAS Identification & traceability rules Data needed by physics General operation construction sites ATLAS-NSW identification rules Check already identified Products to be labelled Products to be tested Product parameters to be recorded NSW-MM Identification & traceability rules

Mandate consolidation (3/) ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)7 2/ Identify checks needed during construction Minimum list of checks asked by each construction site, to assure that module requirements are fulfilled QA/QC group may suggest methods and instruments to do the checks. – The collaboration defines and qualifies the way and means to do the checks. Data needed: List of parts & components General operation construction sites Checks list Risks & acceptability Best practices & standards Product to be tested Product parameters to be recorded Suggestion for check methods

Mandate consolidation (4/) ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)8 3/ Establish methods for the quality follow-up during the construction of the different parts at each construction site. Data needed Best practices & standards Experience from other projects ATLAS quality following rules Methods for product quality follow-up (Database)

Mandate consolidation (5/) ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)9 4/ List the parameters and results of the checks to be recorded. Including the parameters related to measure reliability Data needed NSW-MM identification & traceability rules Checks list Checks critical success factors Best practices & standards Experience from other projects Risks & Acceptability Checks parameters and results to be recorded Product parameters to be recorded

Mandate consolidation (6/) ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)10 5/ Establish the manual for the quality at the different phases of the modules construction. QA oriented: Quality Manual General rules to be each construction site For example: – Management of Non-conformities – Management of preventive and corrective actions – Management of recording – Management of configuration – Management of identification and traceability – Management of critical product – Management of assembly sequence and operation following – Management of delivery checks – Management of transportation from integration sites to CERN – Management of cleanroom conditions – Check, Test and Try – Management of Devices for check, test and try – Training of operator Quality Manual proposal Best practices & standards Experience from other projects Risks & Acceptability

Tasks & work organization preview Consolidate the perimeter (no overlapping with other groups) Define tasks Define a schedule – Objective : work in parallel (fast track) Define the groups in interface Dispatch the work ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)11

First ideas (1/2) ATLAS NSW - QA/QC working group - J. GIRAUD (20/02/2014)12 Preparation of a list of the requirements to be fulfilled in each test. – From the WG on the requirements (planarity of the panels and positioning during the assembly). – From CERN rules (limits on the gas leaks? Other?) – Criteria for testing the mesh before gluing, for cleaning, for testing the tension. – Geometrical and mechanical tests on the single panel and on the assembled chamber. Methods and instruments for the test. – For planarity: CMM machine, laser tracker, others? – For Mesh test: ……….. – For gas leaks: decrease in time of a small overpressure? Leak test with a He based leak detector for instance? Gas sniffers? – etc.

First ideas (2/2) Definition of the tests needed during the different steps of the MM chamber construction. 1)Test of the components (thickness of : pcb for drift panels, honeycomb, frames etc.; test of the mesh, of other components) 2)Test during and at the end of the panels constructions (planarity, stiffness of the panel, mesh tension, deformations, …) 3)Test after the assembly (geometry, tightness of the chambers – gas leak, high voltage current leak, X-ray scanning ) 4)Final test (radioactive source, cosmic ray) 5)Test of sensors (B field sensors, alignment sensors, etc.) Test in the construction sites (gluing farm, assembling farm) and at CERN before mounting on the NSW frame.
