UTAH COUNTY ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS SEISMIC HAZARDS SURVEY AZIMUTH ENGINEERING AMY FREDRICKSON CODY HATCH ASHLEY BLOOD

Many geologists predict the near future will bring a major earthquake (M7.0) along the Wasatch Fault, which cuts through Utah County. Many school buildings in this county were built before seismic building codes were introduced, which puts schoolchildren at risk many hours each day. PROBLEM STATEMENT

April 17, 2013 Annual statewide earthquake drill Over 800,000 registered participants Study conducted by USSC (Utah Seismic Safety Commission) found that 60% of statewide schools are potentially at risk UTAH SHAKEOUT

BUILDING TYPE 65% of schools are Reinforced Masonry C2: Concrete Shear Wall PC1: Tilt-Up Construction RM: Reinforced Masonry URM: Unreinforced Masonry S1: Steel Moment-Resisting Frame S2: Steel Braced Frame S4: Steel Frame with Cast-In-Place Concrete Walls S5: Steel Frame with Unreinforced Masonry Fill

RVS SCORE RESULTS Statewide RVS score results: 60% require further investigation Utah County is performing far above the state average
