Presentation transcript:

The Home Front Legacy project will enable volunteer groups to record and preserve local stories, and First World War remains, for future generations, and map surviving sites across the UK

Partners in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are working together to encourage communities to extend and preserve our knowledge and develop a model of good practice.

“The effects of the Great War are all around us, still visible in our landscapes and everyday buildings. Everyone can get out in the field and document these remains.” Dan Snow, CBA President

Where do we go to find First World War sites? National Monument Records:  Pastscape for England  NISMR for Northern Ireland  Canmore for Scotland  Coflein for Wales Associated sites and buildings not always indexed as First World War Recent desk audits have expanded documentary sources and revealed gaps

Where do we go to find First World War sites? Local Historic Environment Records (HERs):  Algao UK and Scotland members  Heritage Gateway  Archwilio Data may be patchy Requisitioned buildings may not be indexed as First World War Sites may not have been recorded for some time

National Archive at Kew and Local Archives  documents  construction and site plans  military records

People and events associated with the site Stationed at Cannock Chase Camp, talented cartoonist Erskine Williams kept a diary that brings the camp to life for us today  books  diaries  transcripts

The project toolkit enables everyone to record the remains of the First World War in the UK Research and recording data will be submitted to local and national archaeological records to:  enhance historical records of your area and create a legacy  add to our knowledge and help us map surviving remains across the UK

We can fill these gaps with local knowledge, on-the- ground Adding data to Local Historic Environment Records (HERs) matters:  public source of knowledge for archaeology/local history/family history research  inform planning decisions relating to sites  influence future protection for sites and buildings through national designation

Online site recording toolkit The project will support community groups and Centenary projects across the UK by providing an online toolkit to record the remains of local Home Front sites, structures and buildings.  Recording form – online and app  WWI thesauri  Guide to Recording WWI Sites in the UK  Website resource area

Step by step to site recording  Register your project to access our online toolkit and resources  Consult your local Historic Environment Record for guidance on your local area  Follow our Guide to Recording First World War Sites  Complete our online/app recording form  Publish your data on our UK map of sites and projects  Submit your data direct to local and national records Courtesy Stephen Fisher, Maritime Archaeological Trust
