BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING (Also known as Checking Blood Sugars or Glucometer Checks) Monitors blood sugar levels. KBN 2014

Blood Sugar Monitoring O Check blood sugar per DMMP to see the effect of:  Eating  Stress  Exercise  Medications KBN 2014

Glucometers O Monitor blood sugar levels with the use of a glucometer O A glucometer reads the amount of sugar in the blood - usually a small amount of blood placed on a test strip or drawn into a test strip O Many different types of glucometers on the market. O Important - Know how to properly use the specific monitor and keep it accessible at all times. KBN 2014

Tips for Using Glucometer O Follow instructions O Coding – make sure code on bottle of strips or code chip matches code in monitor O Store strips appropriately per instructions O Prepare hands – Hand washing preferred. If use hand sanitizer – make sure sanitizer has completely dried before using lancet. O Adequate blood sample needed. KBN 2014

Tips for Using Monitor (cont.) O Dispose of lancet properly into a sharps container O Record blood sugar level in log book O Parent may need copy of log book of glucometer readings for doctor visits O Follow guidelines in the DMMP ( Diabetes Medical Management Plan ) for treatment of high and low blood sugars. KBN 2014

Checking Blood Sugars O How often? Usually several times each day. O When to check blood sugar?  Meals: Before and possibly 2 hours after meals  Exercise: Before and after exercise  Whenever: The student feels “different or funny” Follow the guidelines in the DMMP. KBN 2014

IMPORTANT REMINDERS O Glucometer must be accessible to student at all times. O Must make arrangements for glucometer at recess, field trips, on bus, and any other time during the school day. O School employees need to be instructed in the use of the glucometer. O If possible at least 2 employees in each building should be trained on how to use the glucometer. KBN 2014

IMPORTANT REMINDERS O The parent/guardian is responsible for supplying the school with all the supplies needed for the glucometer. O A plan should be put in place for the student to be able to test his/her blood sugar in the classroom. O If a student is feeling “funny” or “not feeling well”, the student must not be left alone or sent to the office alone. KBN 2014
