A R R A Y ! for Multiplication!!

TIME TO CHECK-UP ON OUR LESSON’S STANDARDS! MAFS.3.OA.1.1 - Interpret products of whole numbers, eg. interpret 5x7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each.  For eg. describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5x7.  

McCullough’s Multiplication ARRAY! Let’s Score a Goal! My learning goal is to understand how an array is formed and how arrays can be used in connection with multiplication.

Materials Needed Each team consists of 2 players Multiplication chart Deck of cards for each team (jokers removed) To start: Pass out four cards each

ARRAY! LET’S PLAY! Follow along as you learn how to play McCullough’s Multiplication Array! Directions: Youngest player sets up deck first then take turns. Remove jokers from deck. Shuffle the deck. Start by alternately passing out a total of 4 cards each. (You can increase the amount of cards in your set after practicing a few games.) You must always deal out an even number of cards to each player on your team. Shuffle deck after each win.

… But Game Rules State Be Kind, Give Compliments, Do Your Best! Ace, and Face cards are worth one (1). All other cards are worth their value. Eg. Ace, King, Queen and Jack equal one (1), numbers 2 through 10 equal their value. 2=2, 4=4,7=7, 8=8 Keep cards face down Say 1-2-3 flip then each player flips or turns over their card at the same time, leaving it on desk.

MATH STRATEGIES Player only calls out the answer after multiplying the two cards together. Example: You see a 3 and a 4 then call out “12” the answer only! Use your strategies – mental math, write, or draw it out in your Brain Book before CALLING OUT the answer. ONLY AFTER answer is given, the opposite player may confirm the answer is correct by using the multiplication chart.

The Queen Rules! King asks, “But Why?” Player with the correct answer must justify Why? By using groups and number of items in the group. Eg. 5 groups of 7 equals 35. Correct player keeps that pair of cards. After all 8 cards have been dealt please write all paired multiplication sentences in your Brain Book.

The Winner of the game calls out “ARRAY The Winner of the game calls out “ARRAY!” and has the most correct multiplication answers. In the event of a TIE take 2 more cards each, and continue playing until one player has one more correct answer than the other.

ARRAY! GAMES STILL IN PLAY Building an ARRAY! Round 1: With your own winning pair of cards place the cards face down to make an array. Write the array in your Brain Book showing where the groups and the numbers inside the groups are placed. Write out a sentence that will justify your answer. I have 3 groups of cards with 4 hearts on each. That equals 12 hearts

Time For Your Brain Book Let’s get our brain booking for our classmates! For the next example draw out the pink cards and write a story that connects to the pink card array. All work will be shown in your Brain Book . You may draw out another example with thinking questions after first example is complete.

ARRAY – an ordered arrangement of an even number of rows and columns that represents a group and the amount inside each group. Example: 3 rows of pink cards with 4 pink cards in each row.
