Prophets Learning Goal: I will identify the term prophet and how they promote justice.

A prophet is a person who SPEAKS for justice. How are they chosen?  chosen from all walks of life to speak for justice  Experienced disappointment, suffering and persecution because of the messages they preached. What did prophets do in the bible?  Spoke on behalf of God to call people back to faithfulness  Hated any practice of religion not linked to working for justice  Read from the Old Testament prophets – find quotations that show this role.

HOW DO WE JUDGE A PROPHET?  What do we look for to know a person is a worthy prophet?  Name some prophets in modern times.

Criteria for judging a prophet: Connects love of God with love of neighbour Challenges the many evils of society Encourages a new and better life Provides insight into a society through trustworthy predictions Personal life matches with what they preach

 A quote that helps us understand the role of the prophet:  “Prophets comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” (Prophets comfort those who suffer and cause suffering to those who are comfortable)
