 A definite article (el, la, los, las) is needed when naming colors in spanish ( because they are considered nouns).  Me gusta el pantalon negro para mi cumpleanos.  Prefiero el (panatalon) rojo.  This is another way of saying “ I like the red one” or “ I like the blue one” Using adjectives as nouns
