What are Place Values? 2nd Grade

Definition of Place Value The position, or place, of a digit in a number written in standard form determines the actual value the digit represents.

Definition of Place Value (continued) In our decimal number system, the value of a digit depends on its place, or position, in the number. Each place has a value of 10 times the place to its right. A number in standard form is separated into groups of three digits using commas. Each of these groups is called a period.

Table of Place values for various positions Place (Underlined) Name of Position 1,000 Ones (units) position Tens Hundreds Thousands

Table of Place Values for various positions (continued) Place (underlined) Name of Position 1,000,000 Ten thousands Hundred thousands Millions 1,000,000,000 Ten millions Hundred millions Billions

Example 725 Ones’ Place (There are 5 ones) Hundreds’ Place (Plus there are 7 hundreds) Tens’ Place (Plus there are 2 tens) Ones’ Place (There are 5 ones)

Specific Place Values Numbers, such as 84, have two digits.  Each digit is a different place value. The left digit is the tens' place.  It tells you that there are 8 tens. The last or right digit is the ones' place which is 4 in this example.  Therefore, there are 8 sets of 10, plus 4 ones in the number 84. 84 Ones’ Place Tens’ Place

Place Values of Three Digit Numbers Numbers, such as 784, have three digits.  Each digit is a different place value.   The first digit is called the hundreds' place.  It tells you how many sets of one hundred are in the number.  The number 784 had seven hundreds.

Place Values of Three Digit Numbers (continued) The middle digit is the tens' place.  It tells you that there are 8 tens in addition to the seven hundreds.  The last or right digit is the ones' place which is 4 in this example.  Therefore, there are 7 sets of 100, plus 8 sets of 10, plus 4 ones in the number 784.
