CO 2 Satellite data: Current results and future plans Joanne Skidmore, Sander Houweling, Wouter Hartmann, Ilse Aben Space Research Organization Netherlands

Status of Sciamachy CO 2 retrieval  Retrieval at 1.6  m (like OCO but less spectral resolution)  Slow start due to a number of complications: - Ice layer growth on channels 7 & 8 (not 6!) - Problems with data distribution - Problems with data processors  Recently, good progress  First results & interpretation...  Note: Sciamachy is not a CO 2 dedicated instrument !

Observed monthly mean CO 2 March 2003

Observed monthly mean CO 2 August 2003

Observed seasonal cycle – N 0-30 N 0-30 S : Max. plausible range

Comparison: Scia CO 2 & TOMS AI July October

Next steps  Retrieval issues (e.g. aerosol profiles – MISR data, sensitivity to T)  Correlation with other tracers (CH 4, O 2 )  Recurring months of data (reproducibility seems high!)  Collaboration with TransCom colleagues ??
