Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 3 XMM-Newton General XMM activities Summer eclipse 2006 –From rev. #1211 to rev. #1222, 12 eclipses after perigee. –Longest eclipse duration: 59’ –No significant changes w.r.t previous eclipses, operations automatically handled from TL or time tagged TC’s. –One instrument reconfiguration after eclipse affected due to a TC failure (G/S failure).

Should be the final version to freeze. –All ESTRACK network planned to migrate from X-25 to TCP/IP. Affects PERTH and KOUROU. Some minor impacts during testing, plus impact from KOUROU suffering maintenance. –No more regular SANTIAGO support as of Gap with no TC but with TM around apogee. Instruments radiation protection TBD. –Possible loss of KOUROU in parts of 2007 due to ULYSSES nutation control campaign. TBC strategy, STG provides redundant coverage.

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 7 XMM-Newton PN OPERATIONS PN new BRAT of 24 Kbps is now permanent, selected from the T/L or manually reconfigured if required. RGS2 in SETUP from 1207 to 1210, due to analysis of NCR-113 (no science produce, anomaly found correlated to temperature of electronics). Impact on the gain of PN, due to electronics cool down. TC failure in PN F0096 in rev #1214, one quadrant not responding to it and remaining in ROM version. Detected through consistency among all EPEA SW versions.

Offsets to be calculated with or without new value ??? –NRCO-57 repeat, source PKS , SW with offsets in closed  FW set to Thin-Medium-Thick  final Offsets in Thick

The sequence handling the Go To Idle is now 200 s. long. –The new BRAT was also affecting diagnostics. Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 18 XMM-Newton Slow Slew Survey – Overview New Operating Mode proposed to increase flexibility and use of XMM-Newton with respect to future Science Operations. –Full Sky Survey taking ~190 revolutions –Galactic Plane Survey taking ~15 revolutions PN designated as prime instrument and to be used in Full Frame (Medium). MOS to use new 3x3 binning mode (Medium). RGS using CCD5 (Oxygen Line) and CCD9 (Soft Proton Detection) with polling sequence ( ).

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 20 XMM-Newton Slow Slew Survey – Preparation MOC perform testing of slew speeds at both 20 deg/h and 30 deg/h. The later is chosen to be used during rev PN Offset calculation repetition rate increased to 100 to gain cleaner pixel by pixel offset values. Testing indicates no problems. Database definitions already present hence no further work required. MOS 3x3 binning mode implemented with its reduced frame time of 0.4s in comparison to Full frame (2.7s). Initial testing performed manually during rev 1210, with relevant definitions consequently being applied in the database and re-tested during rev 1228.

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 21 XMM-Newton Slow Slew Survey – Preparation (cont) Updated Database released to support rev 1242 Survey. Due to no proposals being available for Slew Survey, and consequently no targets, the planning could not be performed using the Proposal Handling System. This meant that a high level of manual intervention was required to produce the POS/ICP. Rules and Constraints file used to integrate database components into planning cycle. Thereby, offering full flexibility and by passing the need for Activities.

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 22 XMM-Newton Slow Slew Survey – MOS 3x3 Binning First test during rev 1210 (CALCLOSED) was performed only on MOS-1, without any Bright Pixel masking and theoretical offset tables (TC’s manually modified). The test being performed with both 0.4s and 0.5s integration times. Second test, to verify database entries, was performed during rev 1228 (CALCLOSED) on both MOS-1 and MOS-2. Bright Pixel Tables were derived from the 1x1 Sequences and Offsets based on results seen during rev No further changes were necessary for rev Clock sequences used were the same as for 3x3 diagnostic. Bandwidth remained at roughly 6kb/s during above testing. Therefore, no appreciable increase compared to 1x1 (CALCLOSED).

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 24 XMM-Newton Slow Slew Survey – Rev 1242 Survey consisted of 16 Open Loop slews across the Galactic Centre each lasting around 1.5 hours at a rate of 30 deg/h with each leg being separated by 15 arcmin. A Closed Loop Slew (~17 mins) then being used to move from the end of one OLS to the start of the next. In order to keep filter wheel movements to a minimum EPICs remained in an Medium position during all slews. To ensure EPIC safety against radiation, RGS remained observing during both Open and Closed Loop slews thereby providing soft proton detection at all times.

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 25 XMM-Newton Slow Slew Survey – Rev 1242 (cont) MOS/PN sent to idle at end of each Open Loop Slew (FW remained in Medium) This ensured correct termination of data products for each leg. During the Closed Loop Slew PN down-linked discarded lines. RGS used as originally foreseen. OM used in Image+Fast (UVM2) with reduced window size (2 windows of 22x23).

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 26 XMM-Newton Slow Slew Survey – Future Activities Super ED’s required to rejoin instruments during an Open Loop Slew, thereby removing the current constraint of re- joining at the start of the next leg (worse case loss of 1.5 hours). Incorporate inputs from calibration team for 3x3 mode (new offsets/Bright Pixel Tables) into Database (i.e. fully commission mode). PN observations will be extended into the Closed Loop Slews by sacrificing down-link of discarded lines. Requires new ED. Implement strategy for reduction of manual activities required for POS/ICP Generation.

Guillermo Buenadicha / Neil Cheek SOC Operations Support Group Page 27 XMM-Newton General XMM activities In 2007 the Ulysses spacecraft will see the return of the nutation phenomenon that occurred in 1994 and The nutation is expected to begin in January 2007 and reach a maximum in September As on the previous occasions, the NASA DSN stations will not have full 24- hour visibility throughout the period, and in order to keep the nutation under control, additional ground stations must be considered. The Kourou ground station provided excellent support in 1994 and 2001 and is an obvious candidate this time as well. XMM-Newton will use Santiago for this period.
