The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: Cell Troy Valdovino Kara Tanigawa Jeff Chong

The Nucleus - The nucleus is the control center of the cell. - It is protected by the nuclear membrane, contains a nucleolus (produces ribosomes), is filled with chromatin, and uses nuclear pores for moving ribosomes and excreting waste.

Nucleolus - The nucleolus is the center of the nucleus and is the origin of all of the cells directions. - Produces ribosomes to send directions to the cell.

Ribosome - The sites of the protein synthesis. - They are found on the ER.

Endoplasmic Reticulum - The ER is made of the smooth and rough vesicles. - They communicate with organelles. - Participates in the synthesis of proteins and lipids.

Golgi Apparatus - Packages and delivers proteins. - Chemically alters products which pass through.

Mitochondria - The major site of chemical reactions. - Transforms energy from the enzymes on the cristae into ATP. - Reproduces by dividing.

Vacuole - Move in and out of the cell. - Stores the excess lipids and water in the cell. - Formed by a part of the cell membrane.

Cytoplasm - Contains the cytoskeleton and cytosol. - Protects the organelles.

Lysosome - The garbage disposals of the cell. - Contains powerful enzymes which break down the nutrient molecules.

Sickle Cell Sickle cell anemia occurs when a person inherits two abnormal genes (one from each parent) that cause their red blood cells to change shape. Instead of being flexible and round, these cells are more rigid and curved in the shape of the farm tool known as a sickle - that's where the disease gets its name.
