Introduction to Vectors

Overview Definition of a Vector Uses of Vectors Vector Notation Parts of Vectors

What is a vector? Vector is a quantity which describes both the magnitude and the direction of the quantity. Example: 5 miles/hour due north Example: “10 Newton's up”

How are vectors used? To describe weather patterns such as wind…

How are vectors used? To describe forces… such as these which act on airplanes.

Vector Notation A vector can be represented by a directed line segment with an initial point and a terminal point.

Vector Notation The vector below can be referred to as:

Parts of a vector Direction: can be described as the angle that it forms with the horizontal or as a measurement between 0 and 90 degrees east or west of the north-south line.

Parts of Vectors Magnitude: the length of the vector The notation for the length of vector is:

Guided: Drawing Vectors Use a ruler and a protractor to draw each vector. Include a scale on each diagram.

Checking your knowledge Draw each of the following using a protractor and a ruler. Make up your own scale.
