How It Happened Babe Ruth is often referred to as the greatest baseball player who ever lived. In 22 seasons, Babe Ruth hit a record 714 home runs. Many of Babe Ruth's numerous records for both pitching and hitting lasted for decades. Dates: February 6. 1895 -- August 16, 1948 Also Known As: George Herman Ruth Jr., Sultan of Swat, the Home Run King, Bambino, the Babe Young Babe Ruth Gets Into Trouble Babe Ruth, born as George Herman Ruth Jr., and his sister Mamie were the only two of George and Kate Ruth's eight children to survive childhood. George's parents worked long hours running a bar and so little George ran the streets of Baltimore, Maryland getting into troubleBabe Ruth Learns to Play Baseball It was at St. Mary's that George Ruth developed into a good baseball player. Although George was a natural as soon as he stepped onto the baseball field, it was Brother Matthias, the prefect of discipline at St. Mary's, who helped George fine tune his skills. Famous Quote Yesterday's home runs don't win today's games. -Babe Ruth

Babe Ruth’s Hobbies and Interests Anything sports affiliated, bowler, scratch golfer, billiards – he could clear a table. Listening to ‘The Shadow’ and ‘The Lone Ranger’ radio programs while smoking a White Owl cigar. Source:http://thebiofile.com/2010/05/classic-biofile-with-babe-ruth/

Personal Life Babe Ruth was married to Helen Ruth from 1914-1929, then he divorced and remarried with Claire Merritt Ruth from 1929-1948.

Other Interesting Tidbits 1. His real name was George Herman Ruth, as was his father’s. He is the only player with that last name in major league history. 2. His birth date is now widely accepted as Feb. 6, 1895, but Ruth lived his entire life convinced that he was born on Feb. 7, 1894. The birth certificate with that date was for an unnamed male child in the Ruth family. Ruth’s parents lost six children in infancy, including two pairs of twins, with only George and his sister Mary Margaret, known as Mamie, surviving. 3. Ruth lived for a time on the site of what is now Oriole Park at Camden Yards, above one of his father’s string of saloons. 4. Before he turned eight, Ruth had already chewed tobacco and drank whiskey for the first time. He was sent to live at St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, a Catholic reform school, and listed as incorrigible. Source:http://www.si.com/mlb/strike-zone/2013/07/12/99-cool-facts-about-babe-ruth
