{ Text in Graphic Novels Identifying and understanding the different forms of text in graphic novels

Today’s Goal: To understand how text works in a graphic novel.

Yesterday, we went over how to read a graphic novel. Today, we are going to discuss how text and words work in them.

 Dialogue: Usually in speech bubbles  Narration: Usually in rectangular boxes in the panels  Onomatopoeia: Used to convey sound effects  Punctuation: Helps to further express emotions Different types of text features

Classic Text vs. Graphic Novel Classic Text vs. Graphic Novel

A Wrinkle in Time

A Wrinkle in Time is a science fiction and fantasy novel that features a thirteen year old girl whose father, a scientist, has gone missing while working on an experiment. About

 Good vs. Evil / Light vs. Dark  Wisdom and Knowledge  Language and Communication  Fear  Time  And (still) even more! Themes

It’s also full of different text features! Let’s find examples of Dialogue, Narration, Onomatopoeia, and Punctuation

Today, you will be reading a graphic novel chosen from our selection in the classroom. Open up your notebooks to a blank page or a sheet of loose-leaf and title the page “Graphic Novel Text Features” If you liked the book you were reading yesterday, raise your hand. What you are doing today

On this blank sheet titled “Graphic Novel Text Features,” you will be writing down examples of text/words that stand out to you from your graphic novel. Point out examples of unique dialogue, thought bubbles, narration, onomatopoeia, and punctuation. If there is any text that confuses you, mark that down on the sheet too. What you are doing today

On the same sheet you’ve been working on, answer these questions: 1. Do you like how the book you are reading incorporates text in its story? Explain. 2. What is more or less appealing to you about the graphic literature genre? Explain. Closing Thoughts
