Discover Redesign #MFWHSR

Focus for the Day Focus: Develop a Deeper Understanding of the Process and the Philosophy of Moving Forward with High School Redesign In our work today we will….  Revisit the Why of MFWHSR  Develop a common understanding of the Foundational Principles of MFWHSR  Examine ways of Engaging the Community Strategies for Engaging the Community in MFWHSR

High School Redesign is a result of….. ● Inspiring Education ● High School Completion Initiative ● Community Engagement

Effective Planning and Implementation of MFWHSR involves: ●Collecting Data in relation to student learning and student engagement. ●Meaningful school and community engagement of all partners in education; including students, parents and families, teachers and other school staff, business and industry, communities and not-for-profit organizations. Which leads to: ●Enhanced learning by increasing achievement, engagement of all students and quality teaching.

MFWHSR

Over the past year, what topics have you discussed as a staff in relation to:  School Pedagogy  School Culture  School Structures  School Leadership

Student Engagement: The Voice of Students 10 Expectations Students Have of Their Schools

Foundational Principles of MFWHSR: Group Activity 1.Take a few moments to read the description of the Foundational Principle. 2.As a group, use the chart paper to summarize the main points in relation to the Foundational Principle.  Discuss the following in your group:  What strategies have we put into place with staff and students to support this Foundational Principle?  What strategies might we want to start or stop doing in relation to this Foundational Principle to support learning?

Where do we begin? Keep what is positive Bring in what is positive Remove what is negative Keep out what is negative Principle Gauge – Small Groups

SIMON SENIK Starting with Why

A lack of common vision and a misunderstanding or lack of understanding of the WHY leads to: Fear of change Leads to “resistance” Risk relying on a single form of data to inform People do not buy what you do, they buy why you do it. It is not WHAT we do in MFWHSR, it is WHY we do it What holds us back? Flex Time Teacher Advisor Credit Recovery Blended Courses Competencies Quality Learning Experiences Quality Teaching Ensuring Student Success Allowing All Students to Thrive High School Completion

If all stakeholders can understand WHY they are doing something and work together on a common understanding of that WHY, while also ensuring voice in the decision making process, it will lead to successful implementation of Moving Forward with High School Redesign. Our work during this workshop is to focus on the WHY.

TWO PILLARS OF REDESIGN Structural Change Instructional Improvement REDESIGN - TRANSFORMATIONAL EDUCATION According to Manpower Demonstration Research Corporation (2008), “Structural Change and Instructional Improvement were seen as the twin pillars of effective high school redesign” Timetable Changes Programming Physical Structures Quality Teaching Assessment Rigourous and Relevant Curriculum Mastery Learning Personalization Relationships DATA

Why are you involved in Moving Forward with High School Redesign? Personal Reflection

The proper process work will ensure that there is VALUE in implemented programs as they help achieve the common VISION for increasing student success. – Assessment for Learning – Project Based Learning – Credit Recovery – Teacher Advisor – Response to Intervention – Focus/Flex – Blended Learning – VC Classroom COMMON VISION

Visioning What is our ultimate goal for students in our building and in our community?

DATA - Suggested Resource - Laura Lipton “Got Data? Now What - Creating and Leading Cultures of Inquiry” Balancing Hard Data and Soft Data Balancing Qualitative with Quantitative Data Accountability Pillar Tell Them From Me In House Surveys Observations Walk-Throughs Focus Groups Assessment Results

Where do we begin? HOW does our DATA inform our school plan for ? What processes will we plan to sustain community engagement throughout the year?

“Avoid using evidence to prove rather than improve.” - Laura Lipton

As a “vehicle” to achieve your vision Increased Focus (on the WHY) Increased Flexibility and Freedom Increased Tools to Support Change Project Plan and Report Data Resources - Lit Review, Website, Toolkit, Videos, Workshops, ARPDC Support Increased Networking Collaborative Model vs Competitive Model Network Meetings, Teacher Collaborative, Distribution Lists Moving Forward with High School Redesign

Next Steps Future PD How can we ensure that our vision, and our MFWHRS efforts remain a focus for the school year? What are our needs as a staff and what must be put into place to address these needs? Continuous Growth and Improvement Document
