Presentation transcript:

More than 3000 teachers have been introduced to the ERWC; the course has been adopted by more than 200 high schools across the state Thousands of teachers use this curriculum—even if the full course has not been adopted ERWC was developed due to the findings of the EAP by a statewide task force including teachers, CSU faculty, and administrators. The ERWC course is approved by the CSU and UC systems as a “b” (ELA) course. A bottom-up, grass roots process has been responsible for the success of the ERWC A bottom-up, grass roots process has been responsible for the success of the ERWC A Few Facts about the Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum: ERWC

Seven Principles of the ERWC

 14 Standards-aligned modules that: ◦ Focus on working with informational texts; and ◦ Focus on rhetorical reading and writing, vocabulary, and academic language development.  All modules include vocabulary development activities and sample student essays. 3

 Literacy skills ◦ Rhetorical reading ◦ Rhetorical writing ◦ Academic language ◦ Academic habits of mind 4

 We engage students with high-interest texts, and, by doing so, motivate them to be involved in their learning.  We enhance long-term learning beyond the classroom and give students the tools and strategies necessary to navigate through varied and complex texts.  We give students experiences with texts that demand that they think, read, and write critically. 5

6 Reading Rhetorically  Prereading ◦Getting ready to read ◦Surveying the text ◦Making predictions and asking questions ◦Introducing key vocabulary  Reading ◦First reading ◦Looking closely at language  Reading (continued) ◦Rereading the text ◦Analyzing stylistic choices ◦Considering the structure of the text  Post-reading Activities ◦Summarizing and responding ◦Thinking critically
