Sort all of these cards into similar groups and label each group. Sorting Sort all of these cards into similar groups and label each group.

Possible Groupings Food Colors Animals Clothing

What About All Those Other Cards?? All of the other cards have numbers (constants), variables, or variable terms listed on them. Constants are numbers because they can not change. They are constant. Variables are letters or symbols that can change value. Variable Terms are terms that contain variables. Click here to learn more about terms by choosing Tt and then selecting term from the listed words.

What About All Those Other Cards?? Sort your cards using the labels below. The cards above are sorted into like terms.

Combining Like Terms Check out the video on combining like terms by clicking here. You will need to scroll down to the math video section.

Example 1 Look at this expression: What are the like terms? How will you combine these terms? by adding What is your simplified expression?

Example 2 Simplify the expression Click for solutions

Example 3 Simplify the expression Click for the solution.

Example 4 The Correct Answer: C Select the best answer. Simplify the expression. a. b. c. d. The Correct Answer: C

Online Practice Practice your skills and check out these two websites below. http://www.studystack.com/flashcard-47007 Combine the like terms and check by flipping the cards. Continue to work through these until you have correctly combined 6 out of 8 of the cards. http://www.quia.com/cm/25069.html Click play this game and then match your expressions. Continue to practice until you have correctly matched all of the expressions.

More Help? If you have checked out a textbook from your school, you can find additional help on the pages below: Prentice Hall , Pre- Algebra pages: 74-77 Glencoe, Pre-Algebra pages: 103- 107

Next Steps… Now, you need to go back to Blackboard and take the Topic 2 Assessment on Combining Like Terms!! If you don’t feel ready, go through this power point again and do some more practice. Good Luck!!!
