Literary Terms Biography: Autobiography: Extended Metaphor: A true story that an author writes about another person Autobiography: A true story that an author writes about him or herself. Extended Metaphor: A metaphor that takes place throughout an entire story or poem.

Autobiography

A Battle with Mr. Covey What is a Biography? What is an Autobiography? What action did Douglass take after Covey struck him? What did Thomas tell Douglass to do? Explain how Sandy Jenkins helped Douglass. Explain the metaphor: “It [the battle with Covey] rekindled the few expiring embers of freedom.” How is the metaphor related to the idea of rebirth? At the end of the selection, Douglass distinguishes between being “a slave in form” and “a slave in fact.” How does this distinction support the theme of this selection?

A single metaphor that extends throughout a writing. Extended Metaphor A single metaphor that extends throughout a writing. Example: My heart's a stereo It beats for you, so listen close Hear my thoughts in every no-o-o-te Make me your radio (yeah) And turn me up when you feel low This melody was meant for you Just sing along to my stereo Metaphor: Heart = Stereo

Strange Fruit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4ZyuULy9zs Southern trees bear a strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant south, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh, Then the sudden smell of burning flesh. Here is fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop, Here is a strange and bitter crop.

Create Your Own Create your own extended metaphor poem/rap/song At the top include the Metaphor Equation Then write a poem/rap/song that utilizes at least 5 references to your Extended Metaphor.
