PROJECTILE MOTION

WHAT IS PROJECTILE MOTION? Projectile motion refers to the motion of an object projected into the air at an angle. A projectile has a single force that acts upon it - the force of gravity Basically projectile motion is when an object is released into the air. As soon as this happens it becomes a projectile. This object is then affected by factors(eg. forces) that will then determine how far and how high it will go.

WHAT IS PROJECTILE MOTION? Any object traveling through the air As an object travels from one place to another it follows a flight path (parabola/trajectory) Forces acting upon the projectile -gravity (pulling the object down to earth) -air resistance (lifting the object up)

THREE MAIN PRINCIPLES Angle -optimal angle 45 degrees Speed -the more force applied to the projectile the further it will travel Height -the higher the point of release the longer gravity takes to act upon it

PROJECTILE MOTION APPLIED TO SPORT….. In basketball projectile motion is used when they shoot a hoop. 1.Height of release is related to your height of hand when releasing the ball. That is i.e. flexion of the shoulder joint, extension of the elbow and flexion of the wrist 2.Angle of release. The ball is released at an angle at about 80 degrees when shooting at the hoop. 3.Speed of release. Is related to the amount of force summation created when force is applied to the ball.
