Scrimmage ON DEMAND Scrimmage Scrimmage: a practice session or informal game, as between two units of the same team. Stepp – CCR3

Divide into two teams and choose a captain to present team answers Take 3-4 minutes to brainstorm everything you recall about On Demand Writing (ODW). Team captains flip to see who presents the first team fact. If accurate, the team scores one (1) point. Now the next team is allowed to submit a fact and the answers will volley back and forth until you’ve exhausted your knowledge of ODW. Winning team wins a Homework Pass worth 10 points. Rapid Recall (15 minutes)

SPAM - (Situation, Purpose, Audience, Mode) Analyze the audience with WWF – WHY, WHO & FORM Why? (Is the purpose to narrate, persuade or inform?) Who? (Who is the intended audience? What voice/vocabulary is needed to address this audience?) Form? (Are you asked to write a essay, article, speech or letter? Include all appropriate parts of the specified form.) Know your Purpose - Inform, Persuade, or Narrate (tell about a time/event when…) Passage-Based Argumentative Prompt A passage-based prompt will include a reading passage which students will be use/reference in their responses. Students will get 90 minutes to respond. Stand-Alone Informative/Explanatory Prompt A stand-alone prompt may include a very short passage which students will use/reference in their responses. Students will get 40 minutes to respond. Review

It is important to start STRONG by producing an excellent lead paragraph for an argumentative essay. Your lead should include CONTEXT, a clear CLAIM, and a 2-3 point THESIS. Sample Prompt – Teens in your schools have been invited to a council meeting of administrators, teachers, and parents in preparation for a policy decision. Write a speech presenting your position on cell phone use during school. Make your arguments clear and give reason for them. As you support your arguments, consider the counterclaims from those who think differently about cell phone usage. Passage-Based Argumentative Prompt

This sentence(s) should be clearly written in the form suggested by the prompt (essay, article, letter, or speech) and include key words from the prompt that frame the issue. Excellent Example: I want to begin by thanking our school council for inviting students like me to share our concerns about potentially eliminating all cell phone usage during school. Poor Example: You can’t take away something from kids that they need to be safe. Why is the poor example poor? What’s missing? Context Sentence Purpose: to orient the reader to the general subject/issue.

This sentence should state the writers view, or main idea concisely. It is the anchor for the entire piece. Excellent Example: While I understand that unlimited cell phone use for students during school can cause problems, the reasons for allowing cell phone access to students far outweigh these concerns. Poor Example: I don’t care what anyone says, you can’t prevent me from using my cell phone at school. Why is the poor example poor? What’s missing? Claim/Counterclaim Sentence Purpose: To clearly state the writer’s main point/view/opinion on the general.

This sentence(s) should clearly state 2-3 general points (not details) that indicate how the writer plans to prove/support his or her assertion. It should provide the “why” structure to support the assertion. Excellent Example: With a few basic guidelines set by this council, cell phones will allow students access to the things they need everyday (watch, planner, contact to home) and be a tool that actually helps them learn. Poor Example: It’s a free country, and you can’t stop me from calling my parents and checking my important stuff while I’m at school. Why is the poor example poor? What’s missing? Thesis Sentence Purpose: To clearly state two to three “chunky” reasons why the writer’s assertion is correct or compelling)
