30/06/2015 Outline Introduction to Multiple Description Coding Overhead of MDC and its impact on the spectrum Quality Measurements of MDC Support of Heterogeneous Terminals and its impact on the spectrum Conclusions Questions & Answers

30/06/2015 Introduction What is Multiple Description Coding (MDC)? –MDC codes data stream into independent descriptions (or substreams), anysubset of which is decodable –At the receiver, these data streams are decoded individually and independently.

30/06/2015 Introduction Splitter and encoding chain

30/06/2015 Introduction

30/06/2015 Introduction Advantages –Very robust transmission over wireless links –Support of heterogeneous terminals Disadvantages –Increased overhead How will this have an impact on the wireless spectrum?

30/06/2015 Application of MDC to varying wireless channel

30/06/2015 Overhead The outstanding capabilities of MDC come at the price of larger overhead: –The overhead consists of encoder overhead (θ) and network overhead:

30/06/2015 The network overhead for the foreman video sequence and three different quantization values (namely 1, 31, and 51) for IP version 4 (left) and 6 (right) Overhead of MDC (Network and Encoder)

30/06/2015 Quality Measurements

30/06/2015 Support of Heterogeneous Terminals 4G is able to support heterogeneous terminals and heterogeneous services (from kbps to Mbps):

30/06/2015 Support of Heterogeneous Terminals How heterogeneous devices are supported by MDC? –By adjusting the number of descriptors assigned to each device. Other solutions such as Transcoding …

30/06/2015 Conclusions We have introduced and examined the performance of MDC in combination with channel diversity. We have presented quality measurements for the received video quality. We conclude that, –MDC provides scalable and very robust video transmission over lossy wireless environments and it is able to support heterogeneous terminals easily.
