Learning Objectives Describe how fossils arise, and how they are used to reconstruct the evolution of life. Explain the following lines of scientific evidence used in evolutionary theory: biogeography, comparative morphology, embryonic development, & molecular comparisons. Use the concept of a gene pool and the processes that produce changes in the gene pool (mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift) to explain the process of speciation. Differentiate between sympatric and allopatric speciation, using examples to illustrate your answer.

Defining “Species” “Species are groups of interbreeding natural populations that are reproductively isolated from other such groups.” - Ernst Mayr Morphological traits may not be useful in distinguishing species Members of same species may appear different because of environmental conditions Morphology can vary with age and sex Different species can appear identical

Reproductive Isolation The concept of biological species depends on reproductive isolation; that is, barriers that prevent interbreeding and hence genetic mixing. What do you think are those barriers? How would you classify them?

Reproductive Isolation The species is maintained only if offspring reproduce themselves, contributing to the gene pool. Prezygotic barriers Postzygotic barriers

Genetic Divergence Gradual accumulation of differences in the gene pools of populations Natural selection, genetic drift, and mutation can contribute to divergence Gene flow counters divergence (makes gene pools more similar)
