Chinese Information Processing (I): Basic Concepts and Practice Unit 7: Web Pages in Chinese

Viewing Chinese web pages What do you need to view Chinese web pages: Internet connection A browser A Chinese system or Chinese fonts URL of a web page

Browser – A program that allows users to view web pages. Examples: Netscape and Internet Explore. Chinese systems – Software providing Chinese environment. Examples: NJ communicator ad.htm, Twinbridge, Union Way, etc. ad.htm

Chinese fonts – TTF (true type fonts) unicode Chinese fonts (that came together with Windows 2000/XP). If you don’t have Windows 2000/XP, you can download and install free Chinese fonts from nloads/recommended/ime/install.asp nloads/recommended/ime/install.asp  URL – universal resource locator, address of a web site. Example:

Network domains The identity of each node on the network was categorized into domains. For example, this tells users that csulb.edu represents an educational node and the nasa.gov is a government node.

Examples is the URL of the Shanghai government site of the People’s Republic of China. is the URL of the National Taiwan Normal University in Taiwan U.S. web sites do not have country codes.

Encoding issues  Chinese web pages can be in GB, Big5 or UTF-8 format.  You need to select proper encoding configuration to view characters.  For Internet Explorer, click View, Encoding and select proper encoding method.  For Netscape, click View, Character Set and select proper encoding. For older version of Netscape, you also need to set font in Edit, Preferences, Fonts.

Viewing big5 in simplified characters or vise versa The only program that will allow you to view Big5 web pages in simplified characters or vise versa is NJ communicator. No matter in what code the page is encoded, you can select either traditional or simplified characters to view the page.

Search for Chinese web pages If you want to find a web page that you are interested in, you can use search engines. Search engines are programs that will search the web page by the keyword that you provide. The search engines are provided by many Internet providers such as Yahoo, Sina, Excite, etc. The popular English search engines are Lycos, Excite. One of the good search engines is You can use either English or Chinese (both simplified and traditional) to search for the web sites in Chinese.

Steps to Create Chinese web pages Apply for a site to store your web pages. CSULB has already provided you a site to store your pages. Your default web site is Example: Create your web pages. Upload and publicize your pages to your site.

What do you need to create Chinese web pages? You need: An account to store your web pages. A text editor to create an HTML file. An ftp program to upload the file. A web browser to view your page (Netscape or Internet Explorer).

Create your first Chinese page a. You can use Notepad, WordPad, Word to create a web page. Remember to save your web page in text format and the file name should be xxxxx.htm or xxxxx.html HTML – Hyper Text Mark Up language is the computer language that you use to create your web page. The file written in HTML will be recognized by web browsers and display your content according to the commands. The commands in are called HTML tags. Most tags must be in pairs.

Example: My First Web Page This is my first web page. My name is Tim Xie. Thanks. My First Web Page This is my first web page. My name is Tim Xie. Thanks.

What to do next? Save the file as xxxxx.htm Upload it to your site. Publicize it: Let people know the URL of this page.

Uploading your page You need a program to send your page to your web site. This program is called FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program. FTP program can be downloaded for free. A simple and easy-to-use ftp program is FTP Explorer that can be downloaded from

Using IE to do FTP You can also use the Internet Explorer to do FTP, because FTP program is included in the Internet Explorer now. Type: Give your password and log in. Go to htdocs folder. Htdocs folder is the default folder for your web pages. It is for public access. Drag your html file to the htdocs folder. Done!
