The Sierra Leone Company

In England, a religious sect, known as Saints, were devoted to abolish slavery One Saint, Granville Sharp, helped rescue a slave (Jonathon Strong) from going back to his owner by defending him without a law degree. Later, he won a case that helped make slavery illegal in England The issue of poverty among the freed Blacks replaced the abolition movement.

Development of the Sierra Leone Company In the 18 th Century the British decided that freed slaves should have a homeland, which would be in Africa. They then decided on Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leone Company was developed to find settlers for the West African Country of Sierra Leone. The British navy transported app. 300 in 1787 to Freetown The Sierra Leone Company coin

Sierra Leone History Rainstorms and lack of food made life difficult. A nearby chief wanted rent from settlers and when he did not receive it, he ordered the town of Granville to be burned. Sharp and others from the Company provided finances for building a new town and gave them weapons for protection The company set up a plantation to grow cotton, sugar and rice by using native labour that was paid. 1792, the company recruited the Black Loyalists from the Maritimes to go to Sierra Leone (with the help of Thomas Peters, David George and John Clarkson 1800, the company recruited the Jamaican Maroons from NS to go to Sierra Leone. They helped with the defense in a local rebellion over taxes
