REDD+ has gathered increased attention (BAP, Copenhagen Accord, Cancun Agreements) COP 16 approved phased approach: national strategy, national reference levels, results-based actions Ongoing work on reference levels, MRV and the structure of a future mechanism Voluntary action (VCS) and modest funding available International Support for REDD+

Uncertain regulatory environment (domestic and international) National barriers for implementation No UNFCCC mechanism operating No REDD+ credits offered (yet) in compliance markets Limited demand in voluntary markets Challenges for REDD+

Subnational cooperation on REDD+ with clear political prioritization On-the-ground, results-based approach Political consensus and regulatory results achievable Provides close-to-action funding mechanism Room for bilateral focus and initiatives (ex. California/Acre/Chiapas) Regional goals (economic cooperation, carbon neutrality, other) and regional leadership GCF—The Opportunity

Potential cities/jurisdictions/regions - Netherlands: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, provinces… - Belgium: Flanders, Wallonia, Brussels - France: Ile de France, Paris - Germany: Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg, Hamburg, Thuringia - Luxembourg: Ville de Luxembourg - Spain: Basque Country, Navarra, Catalonia, Pamplona, Valencia - United Kingdom: London - Australia: New South Wales, Sydney Climate Focus, REDD+ Platform, Zeist, November 2011Moritz von Unger

Would the GCF be of interest for subnational entities in the Netherlands? If yes, which? What kind of partnerships would be most valuable? Can you contribute to the initiative through existing partnerships and contacts? What would be the best way to channel contacts? Question for the REDD+ Platform:
