Where you could encounter patents - As citations in chemical literature When preparing a patent application When involved in the negotiations for licensing a patent

Type “patent” in this Field and click on “Submit”

Then click on the title with your left mouse button

Scroll to bottom of window and select “Tools”

Beginning the Search – Step #1 in the Seven Step Strategy – Use ‘U.S. Patent Classification Index’ NOT Select ‘USPC Index’ button

Looking for “Hydrogen Peroxide” Select the Letter ‘H’ for “Hydrogen”

Use browser ‘Find’ function to search page for the word “Hydrogen”

Hydrofluosilic Acid / 341 Hydrofoils / 274 Hydrogen / Alloys for storage / 900* Carbureting / 199 R Apparatus / 116+ Compositions containing / 372+ Electrolytic synthesis / 637+ Exchange disproportionation Hydrogenation by / 257 Olefin synthesis by / 656 Generative composition / Ion Electrolytic analysis or testing / For ph / Testing electrolytic apparatus / 433 Testing systems / 438 Peroxide / 584+ Electrolytic synthesis / 465+ Electrostatic field or / 175 Electrical discharge synthesis / 175 Treatment / 943* Sulphide Synthetic resin or natural / 343+ Rubber vulcanization with / *48199 R * Located the subject “Hydrogen” then “Peroxide” Class / subclass is 423 / 584+ Hyperlinks to ‘Manual of Classification’

‘Class 423’ hyperlink to definition of class Step #2 – Class 423, Chemistry of Inorganic Compounds

Note the Manual’s Hierarchical Setup Scanning down the schedule we find the appropriate ‘peroxide’ by following the schedule hierarchy from least specific to most specific Subclass ‘584’ looks good Check its definition using the hyperlink

Step #3 – Finding the Definition for 423/584 Note that ‘See’ references can provide suggestions for further searching Use the red “P” hyperlink See all patents for a Particular class/subclass
