4/20/05lecture141 RESUME WRITING … AND … THE COVER LETTER! 1.RESUME WRITING First, you may be asked to submit a “CV” – it’s the same as a resume. We often use this term in the sciences. It’s also called a “vitae”.

4/20/05lecture142 Second, there may be two versions (later in your lives!) A short version is typically one page. It contains a limited selection of information. The full version has everything! There may even be a 3-page version, say.

4/20/05lecture143 Example…in your career, you’ve published seven books and 32 journal articles, and have attended 45 conferences. You cannot put all this information in one page. Instead, you might include everything you’ve done in the last three years (say).

4/20/05lecture144 We’ll look at the example from the career center, and in addition from the text (page 218): Things to think about and things you should/might include: Identification Objectives (read text!)

4/20/05lecture145 Goals – short-term versus long-term. Education (more important at the start of your career). –Maybe list your advisor if this is for an academic position. Honors and awards. Work experience. –Start with the relevant stuff!

4/20/05lecture146 Professional activities (AMS chapter). THINGS YOU DO NOT INCLUDE: Age, marital status, wife’s and kids names, political affiliation, church attended etc. – personal information.

4/20/05lecture147 THINGS TO LOOK FOR: Format (appealing or annoying?) Use reverse chronological order top) Spelling errors etc.

4/20/05lecture148 And for the graduate students, let’s look at examples of academic resumes. –Dr. Jim Bell (Mars) –Dr. Cliff Mass (Earth)

4/20/05lecture149 2.THE COVER LETTER Let’s look at the sjsu example, plus you can read the text (page 211). Especially let’s see the list on page 216… Brief – “you” – paper – print – individual – checked – proof-read (USE YOUR FRIENDS)

4/20/05lecture YOUR TURN! Write a cover letter to respond to the job posted at (American Electric Power) Print the letter, attach your resume, and give a copy to me AND to a classmate. We will all edit them!
