CHAPTER NINE SECTION ONE

ALLIANCE An agreement to act together in a cause

PROCLAMATION OF 1763 This law said colonists could not settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. This land would remain Indian.

COLONIST’S REACTION! Owning land meant everything to a colonist Those without land had no position in society, they couldn’t even vote This was land of opportunity! They were restless and wanted new land

WHAT DID THE COLONISTS DO? Many started ignoring the Proclamation and started settling in the Ohio Valley

HOW DID KING GEORGE REACT? HE decided to leave 10,000 British troops in the colonies.

BRITIAN ALSO PASSED THE QUARTERING ACT IN 1765 It required the colonies to quarter (provide housing and supplies for) the British soldiers

COLONISTS REACTION TO THE QUARTERING ACT ANGRY! UPSET! ABSOLUTLY LIVID!

WHO IS GOING TO ENFORCE THESE LAWS? THOMAS GAGE WAS SENT TO NEW YORK WITH SOLDIERS TO ENFORCE THE QUARTERING ACT

ONE MAJOR EFFECT OF THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR? DEBT!

REVENUE? MONEY

HOW ARE THE BRITISH GOING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF THE COLONISTS TO PAY DOWN DEBT? British passed laws enforcing colonists to pay more for imported goods such as sugar and coffee.

British warships began to enforce the Navigation Acts by cracking down on smuggling

STAMP ACT The law required that each sheet of every legal document carry a stamp showing that a tax had been paid. (newspaper, diploma, a will, every advertisement, even playing cards were taxed)

FURTHERMORE… The tax was to be paid in silver coins (VERY SCARCE) If caught not purchasing stamp they would be tried in court without a jury!

HOW DO YOU THINK THE COLONISTS REACTED TO THE STAMP ACT? THE COLONISTS ACTED WITH RAGE!! The American colonies had NO REPRESENTATION in Parliament. Therefore, they believed that Congress could not tax them!

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!

HOW DID THE COLONISTS RESPOND? In October of 1765 nine colonies sent delegates to the Stamp Act Congress in New York City. There the delegates drew up a petition protesting the Stamp Act.

The petition declared that the right to tax the colonist belonged to the colonial assemblies not to the Parliament.

BOYCOTT REFUSE TO BUY!

SONS OF LIBERTY A group of men that formed a secret society. Most men were lawyers, merchants, artisans- the ones that were most affected by the stamp act. These groups staged protests! Not all the protests were peaceful.

Daughters of Liberty LADIES…YOU WERE PROTESTING TOO!

HOW DID THEY PROTEST? Burned the stamp paper Tarred and feathered custom officials Many forced the custom officials to quit their job out of fear for their own lives

HOW DID PARLIAMENT RESPOND TO THE PROTESTS? Parliament cancelled the Stamp Act in 1766. Yet, they also passed the Declaratory Act.

WHAT IS THE DECLARATORY ACT? This law declared Parliament right to rule and tax the colonies “in all cases whatsoever”

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST STRUGGLE BETWEEN PARLIAMENT AND COLONIES? PALIMENT VS. COLONIES HOW MUCH AUTHROITY SHOULD PARLIAMENT HAVE OVER THE COLONIES?

THE END OF SECTION ONE….. FOR NOW…..

WHAT DO I DO NOW? 1. OPEN BINDER TO I CAN STATEMENTS 1-24 CHAPTER 9 2. USE TEXTBOOK p. 175 TO HELP ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS! 3. TIME IS PASSING….ARE YOU?
