Presentation transcript:

Death by fire or ice? Why we can’t live forever in a Singularity future. Einstein’s general theory of relativity gives us a critical number the universe must meet to continue expanding at it’s current rate Ω=1 roughly 3 hydrogen atoms per cubic meter but what if Ω>1 or Ω<1?

The Big Crunch What is it? - The universe is not massive enough to over power gravity, in this case it will contract to a single infinitely massive point. When is it? - Approximately 10 billion years

What is it? -The universe is massive enough to over power gravity, in this case it will expand forever. When is it? - All stars will die in approx (100 trillion) years The Big Freeze

Why? The law’s of thermodynamics. - You can’t have something for nothing - You can’t win - You can’t get out The shape of the universe
