Genomes to Life: User Facilities for 21 st Century Systems Biology Biotechnology Revolution offers DOE mission solutions The genome is the key to major advancements in understanding and applications Microbes are Us: Major Discoveries and Diverse Beneficial Capabilities The Genomic Approach: High-Tech, High-Throughput, and High-Quality Data to free the scientist to do science Pilot Projects and Technology Development: We have already established the bases for facilities We have a plan: Science, Technologies, Facilities, and Management

DOE R&D Contributed to: Decreased Cost Increased Throughput Providing the Paradigm for Genomes to Life Facilities Human Genome Project Making the Impossible Routine Cost per base in dollars. Millions of bases finished.

Facility cost estimates are based on New Construction and will meet the elimination of excess facility requirements. Cost estimates are for a fully equipped and completely functional facility. Upon approval of the concept other external funding sources (e.g., third party, multiple agency, etc.) will be considered as appropriate. Facility Cost Estimates=$885M

Management Principles for Genomes to Life User Facilities An open-acquisition process that encourages broad involvement of the national laboratories, academia, and industry in innovation and technology development, facility design and development, as well as host site selection Peer-review process for determining the target and products of the facilities An open availability of facilities capabilities and free dissemination of data, tools, and materials
