“Information Skills in Higher Education: a SCONUL Position Paper” Prepared by the SCONUL Advisory Committee on Information Literacy in 1999 Introduces the Seven Pillars of Information Literacy Model

The Seven Pillars Model

key information skills based on the Seven Pillars model Recognise information need Distinguish ways in which the need for information may be addressed Construct strategies for finding information Ability to locate and access information Ability to evaluate and compare information from different sources Ability to use the information effectively Ability to synthesise and build upon existing information (contributing to the creation of new knowledge)

Aim To test the feasibility of using the SCONUL framework to map the extent of IL teaching: –where does IL occur in the programme? –how is it ‘delivered’? –is it assessed? To test/develop this document to see if it would be a useful tool for : –Module Leaders for assesssing the current provision of IL skills in coverage in their modules –Programme leaders/teams to review overall provision on their programme
