To promote recruitment and development of first class leaders in academic health sciences libraries.

AAHSL Future Leadership Initiative Project Manager: Carolyn Lipscomb, MLS

The AAHSL Leadership Initiative Action Plan includes eight goals supporting three areas: Recruitment Education/Training/Mentoring Research.

Major goals of the Action Plan: Goal 1. Develop a recruitment kit and resources to assist institutions with the recruitment process Guide available at:

Goal 2. Identify and cultivate potential directors by introducing them to the work of a director. Developed CE Course for MLA 2002: Library Directors: Knowledge, Skills and Career Paths

Goal 3. Provide leadership training to cultivate future directors by identifying and supporting training opportunities, jointly sponsoring programs with MLA and investigating partnerships with other organizations and institutions

Goal 3. Cont. Co-sponsoring MLA 2002 Meeting Symposium: Leadership Reconsidered: Developing a Strategic Agenda for Leadership in the Health Sciences Drafting plan for a competitive scholarship program

Goals 4/5. Investigate development of a mentoring program for health sciences library director aspirants and new directors Investigate the benefit of developing an internship program targeted at associate directors and senior and middle managers in academic libraries

Goal 6. Develop a research program that will provide AAHSL with reliable data on the future need for academic library directors, the availability of job candidates, the skills and knowledge required for emerging leaders, and the recruitment issues facing employers
