Theory working group Report

1 St - day report.

We had two presentations on two related, basic topics by Hillas and Ptuskin. The goal in both was to exhibit the basic simplicity and generality of the results. –Hillas: the power input into galactic C.R. –Ptuskin: The anisotropy determined from observations of grammage and basic galactic parameters. We also added to our shopping list of simple problems. 2 nd – day report

We had a presentation by Peter Biermann. We would like this and the two previous presentations to appear in the workshop volume as the contribution of the theory working group. 3 rd – day report

Global fits to cosmic-ray spectrum Theory working group Question 8: How many sources to explain the spectrum?

Three classes of sources Presenter at this conference A (R c,PV) B Extra-galactic Power  + 1 m required AtoyanGalactic GRB ? ? ? Berezinsky 2.5 None if E c = 0.3 PeV x erg/Mpc 3 /yr, for E c = 1 PeV Bergman ? Biermann - Wolf-Rayet SNR ? ? ? Hillas 3 SNII into slow wind ? Hörandel 4 UH nuclei - - -

Comments Simplest solution is to have two components, galactic and extra-galactic –Generally, A and B are different populations of galactic sources KASCADE “preliminary” result has been very influential this week – showing a “Peter’s Cycle” structure of the knee.
