Introducción Introducción Encounters With Other Cultures Implications Of Cross-Culture Communication Differences

 “One of the greatest stumbling blocks to understanding other peoples within or without a particular culture is the tendency to judge others’ behavior by our own standards.” James Downs  Gudykunst, W.B. & Kim. Y.Y. (1984) Communicating with Strangers. First Edition. NY, NY: Random House.

Conducting Business in Latin America

Six Fundamental Patterns of Cultural Differences  Different Communication Styles  Different Attitudes Toward Conflict  Different Approaches to Completing Tasks  Different Decision-Making Styles  Different Attitudes Toward Disclosure  Different Approaches to Knowing

Guidelines for Multi-Cultural Collaboration  Learn from generalizations about other cultures  Don’t assume there is only one correct way to communicate  Listen actively and empathetically  Remember that cultural norms may not apply to any particular individual

Interactive Dynamic Group Exercise Directions  Break class into 6 groups of people by counting off from 1-6.  Everyone must write down onto a piece of paper 1 thing that they assume no one else knows about them. (This can include personal preferences, pet peeves, etc.)  Each participant shares their information with the group  Discuss who found similarities between themselves and another group member.

Discussion  One effective way to manage diversity within our lives  In any career  In our classrooms- helps creating a true classroom community

El Norte If you are my teacher please do not be like “señora” Helen!!

The site offers history, timelines, lesson plans, games and cultural information in a list of links. The links are organized by continent. Even includes a link for Thailand!   A humorous and informative article on how different cultures view the business lunch.   This web site contains lesson plans, activities and readings to introduce students to the concept of culture. 
